And so I'm reading Plums' recent gender-related thread and am a bit annoyed because it's showing about half the comments and giving links to the others, which wouldn't be so bad if, when you clicked on them it showed you all the comments in that branch but it doesn't. Is there a setting on LJ that I can select that will automatically display all the comments in a thread?

I thought it did show all the comments of the branch if you click on the root comment, possibly not - it is a little annoying though.

Yes, or at least a lot more of them. Click where it says "thread" next to "reply to this" and it will unhide lots of the comments after that post.
