I think this is a calculated trade-off for the possibility of electoral reform.

China Mieville, who wrote The Iron Council, says it better than me. It doesn't matter about the vague possibility of how we vote for the tyrants of tomorrow if the rulers of today smash everything worth having today.

I read Mieville's article already. There's no doubting his skill as a writer, but I found the tone pointlessly hyperbolic; a shame, since I'm usually a big fan of his work.
