Now I'm all conflicted. Because when [livejournal.com profile] plumsbitch and I went to the cinema to see The Incredibles on Thursday afternoon they had the trailer for the Series of Unfortunate Events film. I read and immensely disliked the first book (something about that cod-Victorian corrective novel for little people style aggravates me) but the design of the film looks like it's going to be stunning. It looks like it's the first two or three books in one film, so I may have to go and see it and see it#f it excites me enough to try reading the book again. According to what people on Barbelith say if you can make it to book eleven then it starts getting all exciting and meta and fiction-suity. There was an interview with the man behind 'Lemony Snicket' a year or so back which I heard, it surprised me that I disliked the book so much because I liked what he had to say. Oh well...

I share your pain.

I was less than impressed with the irst book and I never bothered to read any more. For me it was someone trying very hard to do Roald Dahl without the sense that the admirable characters would win in the end.

I've since re-evaluted my impression and realised that Handler was not writing for children and that the unremitting misery that befalls the characters is the whole point of his satire on a particular style of young adult literature.

I still don't like the books and the notion of paying to see a film starring Jim Carey hurts very much.

But the trailer looks gorgeous.
