Hundreds of people are expected to protest outside the Malawi High Commission this Saturday , as part of an international effort to show support to Malawians Tiwonge Chimbalanga and Steven Monjeza.
The couple were sentenced to 14 years hard labour on the 20th of this month; their crime - being in love.
The case has caused many human rights campaigners across the globe to speak out :
Amnesty International stated “This sentence sends a strong and unacceptable message that discrimination is legally justified in the Malawi justice system.”
Human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell commented “This is an appalling, vindictive and brutal sentence, which tramples on Malawi’s constitution, violates personal privacy and reverses the country’s commitment to human rights. Fourteen years with hard labour could kill Steven and Tiwonge. Prison conditions are appallingly unhealthy”.
Michael Nastari organiser of the London protest said “I like so many others felt sickened by the news of this appalling sentence.” With reference to the sentence of Unnatural Acts he goes on to state “All people should have a human right to freedom of expression; if two people wish to express their love for each other then they should be free to do so.Steven and Tiwonge should be free to express themselves and their love for each other in a way which is natural to them.”
The global outrage has sparked simultaneous protests planned in Berlin, San Francisco, San Diego and New York with more expected to follow as worldwide condemnation of the news spreads.
Latest News: As of today (26.05.10) the word from Malawi is that the couple have been seperated and now been taken to separate prisons.
NOW IS THE TIME FOR US TO SHOW OUR OUTRAGE OF THE TREATMENT OF TWO PEOPLE WHOSE ONLY CRIME IS TO LOVE ONE ANOTHER.
